For twenty years, no British female swimmer had won an Olympic gold medal and then at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Rebecca Adlington won two: one of which broke a twenty year Olympic record at the same time.

During the preparation for the 2008 Games, the British National Lottery contributed £265 million in a scheme named the World Class Pathway. This supported athletes preparing for the Olympics including Rebecca Adlington who is convinced the lottery funds were key to her success. This money gives the sportsmen and women access to world-class coaching, training and medical support.  The success of this initiative was made clear by the total of over 140 medals won by participating athletes. As we approach the 2012 London Olympic Games a similar scheme is now in place.

The UK lottery draw funds do not only finance Olympics athletes however. From every pound spent on the lottery, twenty-eight pence goes towards good causes and five pence of that goes into Olympic finances.

The Government set up the Olympic Lottery Distributor to oversee the distribution of funds to suitable projects. This body will have an income of £1835 million to be used to support the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

A total of £2.2 billion of the British National Lottery funds will be allocated to providing the facilities for the Games. This investment will provide a long-term legacy for not only London but also the whole country. Interestingly, this money will not all be lost. Land used for the Olympics will be sold off after the Games and the profits paid back into lottery funds for use in other projects.

One area of the investment from the UK lottery draw involves the Olympic village. During the Olympics this will house some 17000 athletes and officials and 6000 during the Paralympic Games. Once the events are over, however, the site will contribute to the Stratford City regeneration scheme, providing around 4000 new office buildings, dwellings, leisure facilities and a shopping complex.

The British National Lottery is financing other related projects too. For example, £3 million has been given to Unlimited, a scheme providing art and sports opportunities for the deaf and disabled as part of the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad.

In a recent interview Rebecca Adlington took time to thank all the players of the UK lottery draw for providing the funds for athletes. There is no doubt that the lottery funds have made a major contribution to the financing of the Olympic Games.
